Winter Haiku

March 1, 2019 | by Suria Tei

winter morning
the cat’s shadow
on the kitchen wall

* * *

wintry sunshine
on my bookshelves
words chuckle

* * *

outside: winter rain
inside: my father’s portrait,

a dozing cat

* * *

after last night’s storm
my neighbour’s old trampoline
slanted, still standing

* * *

wintry downpour
the Buddha smiles
in the garden

* * *

the cat
chases winter’s tail
on the sunlit lawn

* * *

on a naked branch
a lone bird sings into
winter solstice

* * *

this winter
I am a withered leaf, tangling
on the bough

* * *

doused in grey
the blank wall before me –
my world

* * *

night deepens
a yellow half-moon outside the window
a listening ear

* * *

I light a candle
for the Buddha
on this dark winter morning

* * *

winter moon
in the afternoon sky
the sun is confused
