St Andrew’s and St George’s West Church in George Street, Edinburgh is well-known for its annual second-hand book fair. The event takes place across one week in May—Christian Aid week—and over the last decade the sale has raised more than £1 million for the work undertaken internationally by that charity. This year Scottish artist and writer John Byrne is patron of the week-long fair which retains its renowned focus on books but now includes pictures, records , postcards and collectables. The fair opens at 10.00am on Saturday 12 May and then runs Monday 14 May until Friday 18 May. And with the sheer volume and quality of material on sale, we are delighted to report that the Undercroft Cafe is open all day for those who need to take a break from browsing!
Christian Aid gives relief to the poorest people of the world, wherever there is suffering, disaster or famine, and helps to rebuild shattered lives. This sale is one of the biggest charity book sales in the world and for many years it has been the largest volunteer-led fund-raising event for Christian Aid in the United Kingdom.
And… 2018 Patron John Byrne has generously donated a self portrait to the Sale. This is being sold by silent auction. We’re accepting sealed bids and bids by email until the end of the auction on Saturday 12 May at 10.30am . The reserve price is £5,000. Email your bid to email@example.com.
