We’ve asked Scotland’s leading writers, booksellers, festival directors and critics to pick one, or two, books — published this year or in the past — that they most enjoyed reading in 2018. There will be new selections every day throughout December — so keep reading for great ideas about what to read next and visit your nearest high street bookshop to purchase your Christmas gifts! Today’s selection is from Rosemary Goring.
Kirsty Gunn’s Caroline’s Bikini is the outstanding novel of the year. The story of an advertising copy writer who starts to neglect her day job in order to ghost write her long-lost friend Evan’s account of his romance with his landlady, it is surprising and beguiling at every turn. Set in a series of London pubs and bars, the changing backdrop mirroring the shifting mood of the novel, this is sharp social and political comedy. Nor is it just an amusing piece of technical wizardry: I found it deeply moving.
